INIVIT has as antecedent the “Provincial Agamic Seed
Bank” founded in September, 1976. In the middle of
1969, the “Development Center of Agamic Seeds”
(CEMSA) was created as an entity dedicated to the research-development
and ‘seed’ production of tropical root and tuber
crops, banana, plantain and papaya.
In 1976, our Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz visited
CEMSA for the first time and as result of his visit, researches
on bananas and plantains were started. The Research Institute
of tropical root and tuber crops, bananas and plantains
(INIVIT) emerged in 1987 and the Research Stations from
Cascajal and Camaguey were incorporated to the Institution.
Later, in April, 1991, a second visit took place and he
recommended including other crops such as potato and vegetables,
as well as, other occupational activities.
